What's the Difference Between CBG vs. CBD?

With experts saying that the CBD market will be worth nearly $60 billion by 2030, it’s an understatement to say that the industry is booming. But, really, there are so many CBD products to choose from, between creams, oils, gummies, and edibles.

Yet, the rise of CBD has come with a host of other cannabis products made from various cannabinoids, such as Delta-8, THC, and CBG.

In this article, we’ll explore the differences between CBG vs. CBD, so continue reading to learn more!

An Introduction to CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Although psychoactive, it’s non-euphoric, meaning it doesn’t cause the user to get high (like THC). However, imaging studies show that CBD can alter brain activity and connectivity patterns.

Many know of CBD because of its medical benefits, such as:

  • Decreasing anxiety and depression
  • Inflammation reduction
  • Pain relief

Currently, scientific studies are underway to understand if CBD could be a potential treatment for more severe conditions, as well, such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease.

What Is CBG?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is also a non-euphoric cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. It is similar to CBD in the way it binds to the receptors in the brain. But it behaves differently than CBD in the brain.

Yet, there is far less scientific data on taking CBG than on taking CBD. The available research so far suggests CBG in therapeutic products can help treat the following:

  • Glaucoma
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s disease

Although more studies will help determine how well CBG treats various conditions, many have already found anxiety, inflammation, and pain relief using CBG products.

For those interested in trying CBG, new CBG technologies allow you to buy products like CBG isolate to make creams, lotions, and even soft gels for oral consumption.

The Differences, Explained

As you can see, both of these are cannabinoids in cannabis. However, the primary difference between CBD vs. CBG is that CBD is a major cannabinoid, while CBG is a minor cannabinoid.

What does that mean?

CBD makes up a bigger percentage of the cannabinoids in the cannabis plant than CBG. In other words, each plant has much more CBD than CBG.

The amount of CBG in the cannabis plant doesn’t affect its effectiveness. But because there is far less of it in the plant, CBG products are not as abundant as CBD products.

That doesn’t mean CBG products aren’t as good. In fact, CBG may be better at treating some conditions than CBD. But, of course, the reverse is also true. But more data is necessary to make definitive conclusions.

For now, those suffering from debilitating anxiety, inflammation, or pain can take CBD and CBG together to help alleviate symptoms.

CBG vs. CBD: Which Do You Choose?

When discussing the contrasts between CBG vs. CBD, you can see they are much more similar than they are different. Both cannabinoids will not get you high like THC and have healing properties to help treat various conditions.
